La Tallera’s programming seeks to stimulate and bring to light proposals situated in the Morelos context. It is based on the museum’s historical vocation, conceived by David Alfaro Siqueiros as a workshop-school. In that sense, one of the lines of its exhibition program focuses on carrying out projects with artists who, in addition to conversing with the painter’s legacy, have contributed to teaching in Morelos. Gustavo Pérez Monzón, a Cuban artist living in Cuernavaca since 1993, was director and one of the founders of the Visual Arts area of the Centro Morelense de las Artes (1996) in Cuernavaca. In addition to belonging to a generation that in the last two decades of the last century transformed the arts in Cuba, he has also been a leading figure in artistic education.

In his exhibition AIRE, Pérez Monzón presents site-specific graphic interventions on the floor and walls, as well as large-scale works and abstract textiles. Based on his research on the graphic heritage of different esoteric cosmogonies, the exhibition proposes a dialogue between this occult vision belonging to the abstract and the geometric facet of Siqueiros’ mural work. By focusing his work experimentation with materials and the spiritual sense of abstraction, the processes and languages used by Pérez Monzón create resonances with the pyramidal forms of La Tallera’s murals. In turn, the title AIRE refers to the imagination, to the abstract, to the sublime and also to the volatile. In the artist’s own words, “this exhibition is an attempt to apprehend the spiritual through drawing, to grapple with the historical ways of representing the invisible that I admire so much in visual culture”.

The exhibition is also part of the cycle América espectropical in that it alludes to the hidden worlds in geometric fields and the subtle energies of forms.
